How to access the ANEF Aircraft Noise planning layer

The Australian Noise Exposure Forecast (ANEF) system measures aircraft noise exposure levels around airports and aerodromes. ANEF contours can be displayed in 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 ANEF units. The larger contour number represents areas subject to higher aircraft noise.

Standard, advanced and enterprise plan members can access ANEF aircraft noise on the Landchecker platform via Planning Layers on the left-hand side menu.

The ANEF aircraft noise layer is available nationally, including data for some major capital city airports, regional airports and other federally leased airports. Watch the video or read the steps below for more details.

1. Log in to your Landchecker account.

2. Search for an airport or a nearby property using the address or lot/DP number

3. Click the Planning Layers icon in the left-hand side menu and tick the checkbox beside ANEF Aircraft Noise

4. Once enabled, the ANEF Aircraft Noise planning layer will show ANEF overlays presented in units (15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 ANEF). Use the dropdown menu to control which units appear - just tick the boxes next to the ones you want to view.

Combine ANEF Aircraft Noise with other datasets

ANEF is used to inform land-use planning, particularly in areas around airports. For example, local government councils may not recommend building residential properties within the 30+ ANEF contour.

To get a more in-depth assessment of a specific property, you can combine ANEF with other planning layers and planning zones depending on your property’s location.

For example, in New South Wales, ANEF can be combined with the low and mid-rise housing planning layer to better assess a property and any constraints that may apply.

In Victoria, ANEF can be overlayed with different planning layers for a more comprehensive assessment of development proposals, gaining a clearer understanding of noise-sensitive areas and preventing potential conflicts between development and aircraft operations.
